Egoli: All that Glitters is...

So from my post yesterday, I did mention that I would get back to talking about my time bringing in 2012 in Johannesburg as well. Background - my mom just moved there about 3 years ago from Tanzania and a few other countries before. This is the closest to home we have ever lived - home being Zimbabwe. It was nice to be going home in South Africa and being so close to Zimbabwe at the same time. I have luckily gotten to see my grandparents and relatives and friends I grew up with every time i've travelled there since just because it doesn't make geographic or economic sense to go to one without going to the other. The flight from Jo'Burg to Bulawayo is about an hour long.

So I went to Jo'Burg and then to Bulawayo and back to Jo'Burg for a few days in my 10 day trip. One of my aunt's who hasn't travelled home since getting here more than 20 years ago asked me to record and document absolutely everything. To be fair I didn't take her request that seriously as there was fun to be had that often required my being totally present, but I did what I could. I took a lot of pictures and a few videos when I could.

The video above I actually recorded the first time I was going to our new house with my aunt and her friend. The convo is very random, but enjoy what you see. For some people this video might make them say WOW this is Africa and to that I say yes! It is, however, not all of Africa. The other Africa exists and someone like me goes between the 2 and all of it is what makes being African so dynamic. We are not one dimensional beings and neither should we deny or demonize the other parts that are "unsavory". I personally enjoy great wine, cheeses and choice cut steaks as much as mahewu, outdoor grilled meat [like HERE] and eating sadza with my hands. All of it!
