afrofoto <-- the WRAP UP!

The rest of the days....somewhat in order, but none in particular

This day I went running outside in upper 90-something degree weather and between the heat being generated by my body and the outside one threatening to boil me - i came back inside and was happy to have made it and not evaporated under the cold shower. I get reaaally reaaally bored on treadmills and it's hard to commit to a certain distance and i don't like having headphones in my ears (slight paranoia) soooo i always prefer to run outside because if i run really far away I have absolutely no choice but to run back when i'm done lest they've invented a pocket sized teleporting machine i missed.

The pink bracelet is made of pink quartz and my mom got it for me in Cape Verde when she went to a friend's wedding. I wish to go there someday not only because i've heard great things about it and the google image search yields breath-taking and picturesque views, but i think it would be interesting to experience a Lusophone African country. Also, Amber Rose is from there! lolz

another day

Another favorite of mine made of safety-pins and beads. Aunt brought it back from South Africa a loooong time ago and i have worn this baby a loooot of times (including last night). It's bright, it's fun, it's unique - sort of like the person wearing it ;)

another day

on this day I wore this skirt from Anthropologie i fell in love with precisely because it was awkward. I've had somewhat of a hard time getting used to the new style of dresses and skirts with the shorter front and longer back. When i saw this one on sale it struck my fancy and upon trying it on i loved the look and feel of it. Took a lunch break and ran some errands and i could see people itching to tell me i was wearing my skirt back to front or something! The only reason they could have been staring right?! What was African about it you may be asking?! Nothing but the person wearing it :)

another day

Got to work and my supervisor decided we have a pow-wow impromptu meeting at La Madeleine up the street and this is what i had - tweeted the pic too. I already knew from checking the weather the night before that we were going up to the 100-teens that day and I needed something breathable in case any breeze decided to bless us, but so that all the heat leaving my body didn't have to get through impermeable barriers. My mom used to live in Tanzania and as such i've accumulated a lot of kanga. One Christmas break I went to Lagos, Nigeria, to visit my aunt (mom's sister) working there and a very good friend of mine had some good tailor hookups I didn't want to muck too much with the patterns of the kanga itself so i figured to fold it in half and cut a head out of it in the middle. I didn't want to cut the sides either so I just had it stitched in a curvaceous S with space for the arms and VIOLA!!! To this day i looooove this shirt and wish I had just done it to all of my kangas especially because it was soooo cheap (free for me ;) ). I will have a WHOOOLE post on kangas soon because they are amazing and have such a rich history to them.

another day

So today I decided to NOT be lazy and actually blow my hair out instead of the usual wash, condition, moisturize, scruff up and (air dry) go routine. I was quite amazed by how much longer my hair is than i thought. Look:

Considering that the pictures above are just the day before you can really see the difference. I love my MFUSHWA! <---that's the somewhat/almost derogatory word in Shona for kinky, uncombable, unstraightened hair. Yes it was quite an ordeal combing through and took some time, but it's a labor of love :)
