on Dams and Death

The post comes after the pictures in this post! Serenity.

Hillside Dams are tucked away in the residential suburb of Hillside and honestly in all my years of living in Bulawayo I had never been there! I am really learning and getting to know different parts of the city and the country now that i'm grown up and go back to visit.

When I was visiting Zimbabwe over 3 years ago, a really good childhood friend of mine decided to have a braai/cookout for her birthday at Hillside Dams. It was all really nice and festivities were in the air as it was New Year's eve.

The whole day had been exciting as it was the first one I would be seeing a lot of my friends all in one place. A lot of them live in South Africa and it was nice that they were all home. For most of us it's like if we don't come home for anything else, we will always be "home" for Christmas :)

Unfortunately, that was the same night one of my really good friends, who had picked me up from home and i'd pretty much spent the whole day with died in a tragic accident. The circumstances and what-ifs for me were harrowing! Tragedy so sudden with someone you see minutes before is haunting. Leaving you/me feeling guilty and like it could have been you with them or you instead. I hardly had closure because my trip was so short and it being a holiday season things were just slow. I was leaving the day before his burial and the mourning felt like an out of body experience. He is in a different place and resting in peace and my wanting closure is selfish. The wound is healing, albeit slowly three plus years later.  May Sikhanyiso Ndlovu rest in peace.
